Learn How GenerateHope Is Helping Women Escape Sex Trafficking for Good

Women who are victims of sex trafficking really need a guide to help them escape that life. And that’s exactly what GenerateHope, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, provides for each woman who runs to them for help. Founded by an empowered woman and survivor of sex trafficking, and staffed with an amazing team of expertly trained women—each person who comes to GenerateHope gets one-on-one attention and a network of assistance. Each survivor is given the opportunity to exit sex trafficking and enter a new life of hope and dreams. Making a difference can only happen one person at a time, step by step.

Founded in San Diego in 2009, GenerateHope has served more than 160 survivors. There is also a dire need for a comprehensive housing program in Colorado, where the organization opened a home in July of 2022.

GenerateHope Provides Long-Term Solutions

Starting a new life, away from sex trafficking takes a lot of work. There is a need for safe, long-term residential housing where each woman has her own bedroom. After orientation, women begin individual and group therapy, which is when healing really begins. Residents have access to free health and wellness services including medical, dental, optometry and more.

When they’re ready, these brave women begin individualized education plans that develop life skills classes, financial literacy as well as academic, career, and vocational support. To allow time for freedom of expression and therapeutic relaxation, residents are introduced to therapy-light classes to promote more healing through activities such as equine, art, music, writing, exercise and more. As you can see, this is a well-rounded program with much thought put into the overall wellbeing of each woman based on their individual needs and interests.

Having a place to call home, where these women can feel safe, is of utmost importance to begin this journey to a new and infinitely better life. For some, this may be their first time living in such an environment. It takes time to settle in. And at GenerateHope, a special kind of loving patience fills their new home. They are surrounded by a small group of other women with similar challenges and goals and a staff of well trained and experienced therapists and experts. This is the first major step in leaving the sex trafficking life behind for good.

Individual and Group Therapy

One-on-one therapy is the foundation of individualized recovery. The GenerateHope team specializes in listening, asking the right questions, and moving forward at a pace that is comfortable for each woman in recovery. Additionally, small group therapy sessions engage in guided discussions where special bonding takes place and important progress is made. A sense of strong sisterhood develops during group therapy and often leads to lifelong friendship and support.

Academic, Career, and Vocational Support

At some point, the healing process enables these courageous women to begin to focus on the future. They become inspired to dream and develop a plan to accomplish goals. For some, it means picking up where they left off in early education. Improving foundational fundamentals like reading, math, and social skills may be a starting point. There are also opportunities to dive deeper into educational goals and begin to learn new skills aimed at achieving the next level of education, certification, or job-related skills.

All of these areas are opportunities to move forward step-by-step towards an end goal of succeeding, according to their own values and dreams. GenerateHope is there every step of the way to encourage, help cast a vision, create a plan of action, and accomplish goals. Custom-created curriculum for each resident results in offering plentiful hope, and the ability to really believe and know they can permanently leave the sex trafficking life.

Health and Wellness Services

Many of the women who come to GenerateHope also face health-related challenges. Rarely do they have health insurance or financial stability, so it is of the utmost importance that they have access to a range of essential healthcare services, provided by the organization. From general medical services to dental and optometry, residents find some relief in addressing health concerns that they may never before have had the chance to treat. This often leads to a greater sense of self-confidence and a sense of reliable provision, which is extremely important.
